Margin vs. markup — what's the difference?
Margin is profit as a percentage of the selling price. Markup is profit as a percentage of the cost. The same dollar amount of profit produces a lower margin percentage than markup percentage, because margin divides by the larger number (price) and markup divides by the smaller number (cost). A 50% markup is only a 33.3% margin — they are not interchangeable one-to-one.
| Markup | Margin |
|---|---|
| 25% | 20% |
| 50% | 33.3% |
| 100% | 50% |
| 150% | 60% |
| 300% | 75% |
